Gary L. Compton, 80, of Springfield, died peacefully at his home on Friday, October 25, 2024.
He was born on October 7, 1944 in Springfield, IL, the son of Archie Franklin and Lila Mae (Stivers) Compton. He was previously married to Gail (Garrison) Compton. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Max Alan and Gail Keith (Marlyn) Compton; and son in-law, Shannon.
Gary graduated from Lanphier High School in 1962 and attended Southern Illinois University before serving proudly as a Navy Seabee from 1966 to 1969, stationed in Vietnam for 3 tours, from which he received four medals. He will be buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Military Funeral Honors for his contribution.
Gary's experience with the Seabees carried over into his career, working as both an expeditor with Rocky Flats and procurement manager with Swinerton. He was also very interested in photography and writing; exploring each throughout his life as both hobbies and amateur businesses.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Gail; daughter, Melanie, daughter, Angela and husband, Shawn; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Lois; brother, Neil (Mary Jo); many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
