Obituary

In Loving Memory of Janet Kaye O’Neil Mitchell

Janet K. O’Neil Mitchell, 75, passed away on September 21, 2026. She was born on June 27, 1951, in Springfield, Illinois, to Bernard Kelly and June Bernice (Paluska) O’Neil and was the third of six children.

Janet graduated from nursing school in 1972 as a Licensed Practical Nurse and spent her life caring for others. She worked in physicians’ offices, served as a public school nurse, and provided care and companionship to the elderly. Caring for people was more than her profession, it was simply who she was. She had a heart for serving others and spent her life finding ways to help those around her.

Janet was a longtime member of Grace Church, formerly Berean Baptist Church, where she was cared for and loved by many who knew her.

She will be remembered for her kindness, her sense of humor, and most of all, her love for her family. She was especially proud of her six grandchildren, Kaylee, Owen, Caitlyn, Liam, Madisyn, and Macy, who called her “Memaw”, which was her favorite title.

She is survived by her children, Nick (Misty) Mitchell of South Carolina and Andrea (Jason) Williamson of Indiana; her grandchildren, Kaylee, Owen, Caitlyn, Liam, Madisyn, and Macy; her brothers, Jim (Sue) O’Neil of Peachtree City, Georgia, Bernie O’Neil of Rowlett, Texas, and Bruce O’Neil of Springfield, Illinois; her sisters, Bonnie Burroughs of Washington, Illinois, and Doris Durkin of Springfield, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and June O’Neil.
