Karen Lee
Kuhar
Feb 23, 1952 — Feb 12, 2023
Springfield
Karen Lee Kuhar (Charlton), 70, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Illinois Presbyterian Home. She was the daughter of Edward and Ruth Charlton (Shoptaw).
Karen was born on February 23, 1952 in Oakland, CA and was raised in Springfield, graduating from Southeast High School in 1970. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Illinois State University in Special Education, with a focus on helping students with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. Her teaching career lasted almost 40 years, primarily at Lanphier High School.
Karen was a selfless mother, providing everyday examples of generosity and kindness. She was quick to offer loving advice and enjoyed celebrating her sons' accomplishments in academic, professional and family life. She loved to plan family road trips to see the country and make memories together.
A devout Christian her entire life, Karen was an active member of West Side Christian Church for 65 years, participating in youth group activities, bible studies, and mission trips. She looked for any opportunity to volunteer or help anyone in need. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she led support groups to share her wisdom and encourage others as they battled cancer together.
Karen had an active social life and was happiest hosting a home full of guests. She always opened the door with a cheerful smile to old and new friends. She took international vacations and joined in regular local events with the Springfield Ski and Travel Club. One of her favorite activities was listening to music and dancing with her friends.
Karen is survived by her sons Anthony Bonefeste (wife, Jennifer) of Oak Creek, Wisconsin and Adam Bonefeste (wife, Taylor) of San Francisco; grandchildren Olivia and Dominic; and sister Eileen Moore of Springfield.
A visitation will be held at West Side Christian Church on Friday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Side Christian Church youth scholarship ( https://wschurch.org/memorials ). All her friends are encouraged to celebrate Karen's life by performing an act of kindness outside of their comfort zone.
