Patrick Joseph Hickey — Pat to those who loved him — was a man whose hands were equally at home on the strings of a guitar and over a simmering pot of chili. He passed from this world in the quiet hours of Sunday morning May 10, 2026, at 2:30 a.m. Born in Springfield, Illinois, on March 12, 1959, he lived sixty-seven years with a fullness that most could not crowd into a hundred.
Pat gave decades of steady, faithful service to the State of Illinois — work that suited a man who believed in building things that last, and where he made a lifetime of friends along the way. But the full measure of his working life extended well beyond those walls. At Ink186's afterschool program, he poured himself into young people with the same quiet dedication he brought to everything he loved. As a job coach at SPARC, he walked alongside others at pivotal moments in their lives, offering guidance with patience and without judgment. Pat had a gift for showing up for people who needed someone in their corner, and children and young adults were never far from the center of his heart.
He was, above all else, himself — completely and without apology. Pat never measured his worth against the crowd, and if his passions, his convictions, or his way of moving through the world set him apart from others, he accepted that as the natural consequence of living honestly. Authenticity was not something he strived for; it was simply what remained when everything performative was stripped away. In a world that rewards conformity, he was quietly, stubbornly original.
His love of music and instruments was no idle hobby — it was a devotion. Pat played for the Mass, offering his gift back to the God he loved with an uncomplicated, enduring sincerity. Music was, for him, another form of prayer.
His chili was legendary not because of any secret ingredient, but because Pat understood something few cooks ever grasp: that greatness is a process, not a recipe. Thirty years of tasting, adjusting, and refining produced something that could not be written down — it could only be experienced.
He was a traveler with a specific purpose: to find the finest version of whatever food a place had to offer, and he would drive as far as necessary to find it. Pat approached the table the way he approached life — with curiosity, with standards, and with joy.
Pat is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Loretta Hickey, and his beloved sister Kathy Heimlich. He is survived by his son Nathan; his sisters Tari Jones and Karen Schaub; his brothers Mike and John Hickey; and a wide circle of nieces and nephews who knew the particular gift of having Pat in their lives.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Church, where Pat was a devoted parishioner and offered his gift of music to the congregation through his guitar and voice. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
