Rose E.
Longknife-Black
Jul 17, 1944 — Oct 17, 2026
Springfield, Illinois
Rose E. Longknife-Black, "Rosie Phillips," 82, of Kincaid, IL, passed away in the early morning of Saturday, October 17th, 2026, at her daughter's home in Springfield, IL, after a fearless battle with breast cancer.
Rosie was born on July 17, 1944, in Taylorville, IL, to Frank Bernard Phillips and Juanita Jeanette Hawkins, the youngest of six children.
She graduated from South Fork High School in 1962 and worked for the State of Illinois. She retired as an in-home health care provider.
She was a lifelong member of the Kincaid Church of God. She married Carl Gullidge in 1970 and later divorced. She remarried Jerome E. Longknife-Black in 2004 at the parsonage. Her last wish was to attend one last time to say goodbye to her friends, which was granted.
Rosie was a shy, redheaded, coal miner’s daughter who loved playing cowboys and Indians as a child. She read and watched westerns her whole life. She especially loved John Wayne. In the 80s, she drove her family out west to the beautiful foothills of the Organ Mountains in New Mexico, where they lived for some time.
More than anything, Rose loved her family; she loved cooking for her family, especially during the holiday season. She loved summer; she would hit all the rummage sales in town or be out fishing with her brother and son. During the 4th of July, no one was safe from her firecracker antics.
She spent the last three years comfortably cared for in her daughter's home while completing a bucket list and enjoying her grandchildren until her last breath.
She will be remembered as a lady with true grit, humor, and grace.
Rose is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Booker, and son, Michael Gullidge. Her grandchildren: Larry Rowden II; Jacquelyn Booker (Zach Bauman); Amy Graham (Jeremy); Bradley Booker (Laura Jestis). Great-grandchildren: Trenton Murphy; Ava and Addison Booker. Nieces and nephews: Sharon McQuire; Steve Kerwin; Richard Huddleston; Sherri Kay; Kathryn Fairchild.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: James Phillips; Daniel (Barbra) Phillips; and David (Mary Ann) Phillips; Sisters: Carol (William) Kerwin; and Judith Halcomb. Nieces: Sally Hathaway; Sarah Kerwin; Rebecca Turner; and a great-grandchild: Kaiden Gullidge.
Rosie enjoyed the celebration of her life party that was held in her honor on September 8th with family and friends. There will be no religious service or burial. She will be cremated, and her ashes will be interred at a later date to fulfill her final wishes with her family.
The family would like to give a special “Thank you” to Heartland Hospice for the outstanding care, friendship, and guidance they gave Rose and her daughter during this time, and to Premier Cremation Services/Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home for their patience and guidance thru this difficult time.
