Timothy Reade Maultsby passed away the evening of September 7, 2024 in Springfield, Illinois. He was attending the national championship of the United States Boomerang Association with his wife, Linda, when he unexpectedly suffered a massive heart attack. It is with great sadness that his family announces his passing and extends their gratitude to all who have offered their condolences and invaluable support.

He is survived by his devoted partner (in love and in crime), Linda Tart Maultsby, and their three 'Maultsby babies' who he loved with all his heart: daughters, Sarah Catherine and LeeAnne Reade, and son, Michael Warren. He will be deeply missed by his sisters, Laurie Crabtree (Barry) and their children, Kit and Wyatt; Amy Anderson (Rod) and their daughters, Meg and Mary; and his sister-in-law, Helen Lee Tart of Raleigh.

He was predeceased by a brother, Warren, and his parents, Jack and Anne Maultsby. Many of Tim's most wonderful qualities like his unfailing generosity and forthright devotion to his loved ones were inherited from these two remarkable individuals.

A native Chapel Hillian, Tim was born at NC Memorial Hospital on September 25, 1957. The family resided in the Colonial Heights area of Chapel Hill. As one of the neighborhood kids, and as a member of the CHHS Class of 1975, Tim formed many close friendships that still endure to this day. He worked as a computer programmer at Blue Cross Blue Shield until his retirement.

The family was steeped in UNC sports tradition. A proud Tar Heel, Tim was an avid follower of football, basketball and baseball. He often joked about having a 'captive audience' for his boomerang throwing when people were lined up for games.

He was rarely seen without a boomerang in his hand, or within easy reach. Tim took great joy in teaching interested observers (especially kids) how to throw, and he carried extra boomerangs so they always left with one of their own. Tim also loved playing darts. Starting in 1975, he never missed a season as a member of the Triangle Dart League and Thursday nights with his team were very seldom missed.

Like his entire family, he loved animals, and had an unmatched tenderness and compassion for all living creatures. Countless pets over the years brought him happiness and companionship.

His love of music was evidenced by his extensive record collection, his personally curated playlists, and his enjoyment of a good live show; especially if it happened to be near a casino.

He often visited his family's beach house on Oak Island. Any given day, you might see him sitting over a jigsaw puzzle, or on the porch untangling kite strings and blasting the Grateful Dead; finishing the day throwing boomerangs at sunset.

Tim will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on and never be forgotten.

The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and staff at Springfield Memorial Hospital for their heroic efforts and care in the emergency room. Arrangements have been entrusted to Premier Cremation Services and Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donation Network.

A celebration of life is planned for October 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Camp New Hope where Tim and Linda were married.
